Care in a nutshell
Wiring: Some species of Cotoneaster shed their leaves in autumn. Then the application of bonsai wire is easy. The young shoots are easy to bend and shape. If the wire presses into the bark later, the bonsai should be unwired. The best way to do this is to use a wire cutter for bonsai. With it, the wire can be easily cut into pieces and removed. Cotoneaster bonsai can also be formed just by pruning.
Fertilisation: Fertilize abundantly from March to September with organic bonsai fertilizer such as Biogold, Hanagokoro) or Liquid bonsai fertilizer.
Irrigation: Do not keep too dry. Water a Cotoneaster bonsai evenly, especially before and during flowering and fruit ripening, in order to ensure a rich fruit hang.
Pruning: Cotoneaster tolerates pruning very well and sprout fast even after drastic cuts. Often then, strongly growing shoots form on the lower part of the trunk. If these are not needed, you should break them out early or cut them off directly on the trunk with sharp concave cutter.
Overwintering: Cotoneaster bonsai are only suitable for keeping as an outdoor bonsai. This means that a cold winter, e.g. in an unheated foil tent, is tolerated well and is necessary. There, frosts down to -10°C are well tolerated for a short period of time.
Repotting: Repot in early March in a well-drained bonsai soil (Akadama) with a stronger root cut. If there are a lot of roots in the bonsai pot, up to 30% of these roots can be removed when repotting. If possible use an old bonsai scissors for cutting the roots.
