Bonsai fertilizer

Biogold Hanagokoro Liquid fertilizer

Bonsai fertilizers is important for growth and flowering or fruiting. bonsai should not be undersupplied with fertilizer. Fertilize your bonsai trees enought and adequately.

The aim of the use of bonsai fertilizers is to ensure optimal supply of nutrients to the plants. Like the lack of nutrients, over-fertilization should also be avoided. Both have a negative impact on the health and growth of bonsai trees.

The bonsai fertilizers offered here are well suited for indoor bonsai and also for outdoor bonsai. They contain all the important nutrients in a ratio that is right for all bonsai species. They are of organic origin and so easy to use. With organic bonsai fertilizers there is no danger of over-fertilization or salinisation. They relase of nutrients is temperature-dependent and so your bonsai get the nutrients only if the tree need it.

General

Like other plants, our Bonsai need fertilizers to growth and flowering or fruiting. Although bonsai are often small plants, they need an optimal supply of fertilizer. Especially because in the bonsai pot the content of nutrients is quickly consumed.

Organic or mineral ?

Bonsai fertilizers can be organic (e.g. Biogold, Hanagokoro, Liquid fertilizer, bone meal) or mineral origin and often differ only in the mixing ratios of the individual ingredients, especially the main nutrients. The main nutrients are nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, sulfur and magnesium, the trace elements are iron, manganese, boron and others.

We recommend to use organic bonsai fertilizers. They release the nutrients slowly and evenly. And also depending on the temperature. That means when it is warm and the bonsai needs more fertilizer for its growth, more nutrients are released from the organic fertilizers.

Mineral fertilizers for bonsai consist of pure nutrient salts. These work very fast because the salts can be immediately dissolved in the water and absorbed by the bonsai. But be careful: When using mineral fertilizers, please follow the dosage instructions on the packages exactly. The nutrient salts contained in it very strongly absorb water. If you give too much, osmotic interactions pull the water out of the roots. As a result, the roots are severely damaged and the bonsai can die off.

For beginner we recommend to use only Organic bonsai fertilizers. For this reason, we also do not offer mineral bonsai fertilizers.

Ingredients

During the growing season, the supply of nitrogen is especially important. This is needed for amino acids and proteins and is indispensable for cell building. Biogold, Liquid fertilizer, Hanagokoro or horn meal are best mixed with the bonsai soil during repotting (horn meal) or pressed into the ground (Biogold, Hanagokoro). They ensure a good, very compatible, uniform nitrogen supply of our bonsai.

The main nutrients are normally present in the soil and are constantly absorbed by the roots. The resulting loss in the soil must be regularly replaced by fertilisation, otherwise it comes to deficiency symptoms.

Needs

In order to optimally supply a bonsai, its current needs must be taken into account. These can be very different. The following factors influence the need for nutrients and should be considered before using bonsai fertilizers:

(+) means higher demand, (-) lower demand, (0) no fertilizer necessary

  • Vigor of growing: fast-growing (+), slow-growing (-)
  • Substance build-up (+) or Substance preservation (-): Young plants or prebonsai need more fertilizer, finished bonsai need less, especially less nitrogen
  • Growth periods (+) or periods of rest (-)
  • Diseases (-)
  • Stress situations (-), e.g. during hot summer months, when repotting
  • Blossom (0). Fertilization does not hurt, but the trees would form more new shoots and possibly lose their flowers
  • More plants in a bonsai pot (+), e.g. bonsai forrests
  • Bonsai species (+ or - depending on tree species need)
  • Amount of small plants (moos) under the bonsai (much = +)
  • Soil type, Soil structure: Permeable substrates, e.g., Sandy Soils, Rock, Akadama (+)
  • Symbiosis of bonsai trees with mycorrhizal fungi facilitate fertilizer uptake. (-)

If a fertilizer contains only one nutrient, it is referred to as a Single nutrient fertilizer; if it contains several nutrients, this is called a Multi-nutrient fertilizer. For the layman, we strongly recommend using a Multi-nutrient fertilizer. These can be dosed very easily. Deficiencies are avoided.

Absorption by the plant

In the supply of nutrients the absorption capacity of the plant should be observed. This is significantly increased in most cases by entering into a symbiosis with fungi in the form of the so-called mycorrhiza. In addition, a high amount of fine roots is important. That means repot your bonsai reguarly with root pruning. This promotes the development of fine roots.

For bonsai species that are dependent on mycorrhiza, mycorrhiza can be added to the soil when repotting. The mycorrhiza supports the bonsai tree in stress situations.
