Care in a nutshell
Wiring: Applying the bonsai wire is easily possible because the bendable branches do not break so easily
Fertilisation: From March to September, fertilize generously with commercially available bonsai fertilizers such as Biogold, Hanagokoro or liquid bonsai fertilizer
Irrigation: Water a lot in summer, especially when growing outdoors. Keep moderately moist in winter. A ball shower for bonsai is good for watering
Pruning: Cut back vigorously 2-3 times from May to early August with a sharp bonsai scissor (the wood is very soft). Stronger branches are removed with concave pliers for bonsai. Seal large incisions with wound sealant
Overwintering: As an indoor bonsai, overwinter it very brightly and as cool as possible. However, the Chinese elm also tolerates temperatures down to the frost range and can be overwintered in an unheated greenhouse.
Repotting: Repot a Chinese elm bonsai approx. every 3-4 years at beginning of march in a well-drained bonsai soil (for example Akadama) with strong root-cut
