Chinese pepper (Zanthoxylum)
A Chinese pepper tree bonsai (Zanthoxylum piperitum) attracts attention with its pleasant, sweet-peppery smell and its shiny green pinnate leaves. What is unusual about this bonsai species is its yellow wood and yellow roots. The botanical name (Zanthoxylum = yellowwood) indicates this.
The pepper tree is often kept in the home as an indoor bonsai all year round and is popular for bonsai design. In a bright location it is suitable as a bonsai for beginners.

Care in a nutshell
Fertilizing: Fertilize from the beginning of spring to September with a commercially available bonsai fertilizer such as Biogold, Hanagokoro or bonsai liquid fertilizer
Watering: Don't keep it too wet or too dry
Overwintering: The room should be as bright and cool to cold as possible
Repotting: At the end of February in a well-drained bonsai soil (such as the Akadama imported from Japan)
Wiring: The shoots become hard after a few weeks, i.e. the bonsai wire does not need to stay on the tree for too long. Older shoots should be bent carefully otherwise there is a risk of breakage
Cutting: Wound healing is good but can be promoted by applying wound sealant for bonsai. If well cared for, a pepper tree bonsai needs to be cut about 2-3 times a year
