The Japanese elm (botanically Ulmus japonica, elm family - Ulmaceae) is a robust, easy-care tree that is popular for bonsai design. It comes from Asia and is ideally suited for maintenance as an outdoor bonsai. Due to their rapid growth, a good prebonsai and later a good bonsai can be grown quickly.
A bonsai of the Japanese elm can easily be overwintered in an unheated foil tent. Protected against drying out, it tolerates long periods of frost in winter very well. Japanese elm bonsai love a bright location that is as sunny as possible.
Like all elms, the Japanese elm is a tree species that is particularly suitable for beginners in the hobby. It is very forgiving of care and design errors.
