Description

The japanese Satsuki azalea (botanically Rhododendron indicum, family Ericaceae) is a densely branched shrub up to 2m height, rarely higher. Satsuki Azalea are native to the mountains of Japan.

Satsuki Azaleas are popular bonsai plants. The main reason are the amazing flowers. Satsuki azaleas shows a wide range of flower forms and colors, often appearing on a single plant. Satsuki bloom from end of April to June.

Another reasons are: Azalea tolerates hard pruning very well and a attractive bonsai can be developed fast. Often Satsuki Azalea bonsai have strong stems.

The 2-3cm small leaves are also perfect for a bonsai. Rhododendron indicum is an evergreen shrub but sometimes partially deciduous in winter.

Azaleas need a well drained soil with a low pH. Kanuma soil from Japan is ideally suited for this.

A semi-shaded location is preferred. Azaleas well tolerated temperatures below 0°C, but should be protected from strong wind.

When ordering, you will always get the bonsai displayed on the picture (no. 181-29).

Important note on the size: A bonsai is a tree in a bonsai pot. For this reason the size of the bonsai is in every case the size with the bonsai pot.
