The cherry plum (also known as myrobalan plum, botanical name Prunus cerasifera, family Rosaceae) is a deciduous tree prized for its flowers and fruit. The white flowers appear in early spring, shortly before or at the same time as the leaves emerge. The small, plum-like fruits (ranging in color from yellow to red to purple) are edible and ripen in June and July. As a tree, the cherry plum grows to a height of about 4–8 meters with a rounded crown.
As a bonsai, Prunus cerasifera is prized for its elegant branching, attractive bark, white flowers, and decorative fruits. As a bonsai, this species offers a charming sight all year round: flowers in spring, fresh foliage in summer, colorful fruits in summer, and a delicate branch structure in winter.
The cherry plum prefers a sunny location, regular watering, and a well-drained growing medium. The long shoots are pruned back after flowering. Do not prune too late, as this will remove some of the flower buds for the following year.
