Pines (Pinus) are evergreen conifers. More than 90 species are spread around the world, especially in mountainous, often dry areas. Pines belong the classical bonsai tree species and are very well suited for bonsai design. Also in designing Japanese gardens play pines a central role.
The needles of pine trees are arranged in clusters of 2 to 5 needles. 5 needle pines (such as the Japanese white pine, Pinus parviflora) usually seems soft in appearance.
Pine species often have a large number of varieties. For bonsai particularly the short needle pines are suitable. Pine species with long and/or curved needles are more difficult to make a credible Bonsai.
