Serissa bonsai - general

  • Leaves and flowers

A Snow rose bonsai is an evergreen plant. The small leaves are dark green or in some varieties with colourful foliage. The young Serissa bonsai often reacts to changes in location (light, temperature, water) with yellow leaves inside the crown. However, he is recovering quickly. During this time, the amount of water and fertilizer should be reduced. Above all, it must be bright. Place the Serissa foetida bonsai, especially in winter, directly at the window.

Serissa Bonsai have white, funnel-shaped, terminal flowers. The Snowrose blooms mainly in June, sometimes much longer. Serissa bonsai thank optimal care with abundant flower splendour. The name Snowrose or tree of the 1000 stars indicates it. A change of location can lead to the dropping of the flowers.

  • Roots

The Serissa usually has interesting roots on the surface, which can be well integrated into the design as bonsai. Strong root pruning when repotting is not well tolerated.

  • Varieties

There are a number of different types of Serissa available. Also pieded varieties (Serissa foetida variegata) and varieties with double flowers (Mt. Fuji or Kyoto) were bred, but are rarely offered as bonsai.

  • Propagation

Root cuttings root in water or directly into bonsai soil very well. Lightly woody cuttings from early summer are particularly suitable. If they are placed directly into the soil, soil heat and watering with Superthrive seems to promote root formation. But it's not absolutely necessary.

Care, styling

  • Light, location

Serissa foetida is evergreen. Serissa Bonsai sometimes react to changes in location with leaf shedding, but recover quickly. The important thing is: light, light, light. It is best to place Serissa bonsai directly next to a window.

  • Fertilization, repotting

A well-permeable substrate such as Akadama combined with an organic fertilizer, eg. the Biogold Bonsai fertilizer, is best suited. Young Serissa bonsai are repotted every 2-3 years, older plants every 3-5 years. The best repotting time is at the beginning of March.

  • Wiring, pruning

The Snow rose is a very often held bonsai plant. The Serissa can be formed perfectly only by cutting and does not have to be necessarily wired. If you want to wire your Serissa bonsai, make sure that the bonsai wire does not grow in or push in. It often has to be removed after 2-3 months.

A Serissa bonsai can be cut back into the desired shape only with sharp bonsai scissors.
