Description of this bonsai
8 years old Olive tree in a glaced bonsai pot. This tree is approx. 33cm high and was imported directly from a spain bonsai nursery.
The true olive (also olive tree, olive, botanically Olea europaea, family Oleaceae) is a evergreen tree which becomes very old. Very often it has a gnarled trunk.
It has been cultivated for several tausend years. There are hundreds of varieties known.
Olive reached in its natural habitat in the Mediterranean region sizes of 10-20m. It grows relatively slowly.
Depending on the location the olive trees bloom in late April to early June. The developing fruits are well known and popular from Mediterranean cuisine. A large part of the annual production is used for the extraction of olive oil.
Olives are propagated mainly by cuttings. From such a young plant until the first harvest it needs about 7 years. The fruits are harvested from mid-October.
As a bonsai olive trees tolerate a very strong pruning and cutting of the roots when repotting. They should be planted in a very loose substrate.
Temperatures below 0°C will be tolerated for a short period but should be avoided permanently.
