Since they tolerate temperatures down to the frost line in winter, a cool hibernation as a cold house bonsai is possible and advisable. They react quickly to a pruning with many new shoots. This allows a fine branching to be formed quickly.

Care in a nutshell
Wiring: Applying the bonsai wire is easily possible because the bendable branches do not break so easily. This work is best done in the fall after most ash species have shed their leaves.
Fertilisation: From March to September, fertilize generously with commercially available bonsai fertilizers such as Biogold, Hanagokoro or liquid fertilizer
Irrigation: Water a lot in summer. Keep moderately moist in winter.
Pruning: Cut back vigorously 2-3 times from May to early August with a sharp bonsai scissor. Stronger branches are removed with concave pliers for bonsai. Seal large incisions with wound sealant
Overwintering: As an indoor bonsai (Chinese ash) hibernate in a very light and as cool place as possible. However, it also tolerates temperatures below 0°C very well. The other ash species can be well overwintered as an outdoor bonsai in an unheated greenhouse
Repotting: Repot an ash bonsai approx. every 3-4 years at beginning of march in a well-drained bonsai soil (for example Akadama) with strong root-cut
